As Senior Presentation Layer Developer, I was in charge of architecting the client side templates for Intermec's public facing corporate Web site. The assignment included DHTML development, user experience design, and technical specification development.
XHTML/CSS Development
During the development cycle, we decided to create a working prototype, which gave our client a clear vision of how the new site would look and function. The final, approved prototype was then extended into semantic, hierarchical HTML structures and clean cascading styles- resulting in lightweight, flexible templates that were easily integrated into the content management system.
JavaScript Development
For the behavior layer, we wanted to use a powerful (yet flexible) JavaScript library that would provide a concise, easy-to-use framework that was also powerful enough to integrate with an enterprise level Web application. We chose the Yahoo! User Interface Library because it features unobtrusive, Web Standards oriented design patterns, excellent documentation, and an arsenal of useful, customizable components and widgets. YUI enhanced the Intermec user experience in the creation of animated menus, slide show galleries, AJAX tabbing, and modal dialogs.
Conclusion
The final client delivery for Intermec showcased an elegant user interface that was built using accessibility and performance minded progressive enhancement/graceful degradation techniques. The integration of the YUI library further enhanced the site by providing customized interaction models and special affects.
