Symantec: Small Business Home(French localization)
As Senior Web Producer, I was in charge of architecting the client side of Symantec's public facing marketing and ecommerce web sites, producing rich media applications (using Flash), and directing junior developers, contractors, and third party contributors.
Client Side Architecture
My strategy in achieving a robust, lightweight, and accessible corporate web site involved arranging the core components of DHTML into separate, yet tightly connected layers:
- The mark-up layer: composed of semantic XHTML, describing the hierarchical relationship of content.
- The presentation layer: composed of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), which control 100% of the positioning, text decoration, colors, etc, as described in our corporate style guide.
- The behavior layer: composed of JavaScript, which controls roll-over states, metrics reporting tags and user feedback tools, dynamic drop-downs, etc.

The "Web Standards" approach described above allowed the site's templates to deliver meaningful content to older browsers (graceful degradation), while providing the newest browsers with the most interactive, fully featured user experience (progressive enhancement). Building Symantec's forward facing ecommerce/marketing site in this fashion improved the user experience by creating lightweight, quick loading templates that are much easier to management.
Flash Development
Symantec enhanced its corporate web presence by using the capabilities that Flash offers in the rich media arena. I built several Flash applications, including podcast players, XML based (for localization purposes) slideshow galleries, and rapid prototyping of video based tech support tools for assisting users with Symantec's software downloads and installation procedures.
Conclusion
My work in enhancing Symantec's forward facing web sites improved the quality of the user experience, simplified site management and integration into a multi-national content management system, introduced rich media applications for enhanced interactivity, and saved the company thousands of dollars in third party hosting fees.
